The Citizen

The very latest in the Glasgow restaurant scene, The Citizen embraces culture, design and of course great food.

For the new Citizen bar and dining room, a grade A1 listed building has been fully restored to create the perfect space to enjoy food with friends or colleagues, a 218 seated bar and dining room as well as The Editor’s Suite, a private bar.

As part of the Di Maggio’s restaurant group, The Citizen embraces the main principles of the group, fresh food, an inviting atmosphere and great service. Sitting within the Citizen newspaper old headquarters, this heritage is heavily focused on this within the design, which includes Yarwood Leather’s popular Heritage range in Crimson to create a luxury feel.

Designer for Di Maggio’s Kristen explains how the history of the building has been incorporated into the design; “The building is a wonderful example of Glasgow’s rich Victorian architecture, it was the first red sandstone building in the city, and the Citizen newspaper , whose headquarters it formerly was, is still part of the living history of the city. Drawing on the historical context of the building, the interior design referenced and was inspired by the previous occupants, the Citizen newspaper office, through various design details. For example, we commissioned a local artisan stain glass company called Rainbow Glass, to create some beautiful stained glass panels for us. These were inspired by the old printing blocks and part of the design incorporated the letters for The Citizen logo.”

Other bespoke items which give the interior a nod to the past is the private members bar, called the “Editor’s Suite”. The “Editor’s Suite” bar design blends a speak easy feel with that of a private members club.

Yarwood Leather’s Heritage Crimson was chosen for panels to the bar front and to several wing back chairs, to help create that traditional gents club look. Kirsten explains “One can imagine tucking into a cosy leather wing back chair with a dram of whisky and reading a copy of the Citizen newspaper.”
