Method: BS8582: 1979 - Cig & Match

Our domestic flammability test, often called the cigarette and match test is the only statutory regulation for leather furniture. It stems from what can only be called a bad patch in the late 1980's when several people fell asleep with cigarettes still lit and resultant fires caused terrible injuries and in some cases death. The Government's swift response was the mandatory "Furniture and Furnishings Fire Safety Act:1988" which specifies that furniture manufacturers must ensure that all of the leather they use must have an annual certificate to show that it meets this important safety test.
